Story

Kikunoi Honten is a true masterpiece of traditional Japanese haute-cuisine and a living museum, where guests can experience the essence of Japan. The restaurant has been enchanting diners with its superb cuisine for over 100 years and continues to play a leading role in promoting Japanese cuisine worldwide. The restaurant's location at Kodaiji Temple in the Higashiyama area is tranquil and surrounded by natural beauty. The building occupies only one-third of the land, allowing ample space for the picturesque gardens that bring peace to the entire place. As you enter Kikunoi, you'll be mesmerized by the exquisite decor and the art that adorns every corner. The rooms are spacious, and the view of the gardens from the large glass windows is breathtaking. The private rooms can seat anywhere from two to fifty people, with each room beautifully appointed with fresh flowers and art selected by the proprietress. Chef Yoshihiro Murata's unique style of Japanese cuisine, based on the chrysanthemum well's water, is a combination of traditional and modern culinary techniques that create a perfect harmony. Kikunoi's dashi is rich in umami flavor, which delicately flavors almost every component of a Kaiseki course. A visit to Kikunoi is like a stroll through history, with works of art from different eras displayed throughout the restaurant. The staff is welcoming and speaks perfect English, making it easy for anyone to feel at home. The dining experience at Kikunoi is unforgettable, and a true celebration of Japan's rich culture and history.
